I have watched this argument go back and forth.

This is a classic case of there being no right answer, no dream solution
that will please everyone. A simple, brutal, decision has to be made  -
which strategy stands to do the most good for the least harm. Both sides can
put forward arguments and then someone (I guess those politicians whom the
majority (allegedly) of people voted in to office) must decide after advice
from those who know about these things.

You can guarantee that the 'losers', whichever side that is, will not be
happy and continue to protest and generate headlines. The rest of us can
just get on with it.

Sorry if that seems clinical and cold, but this is the real world and we
can't sit on the fence.
