And we should not forget Ron Rivest's "Winnowing and Chaffing", a form
of cryptography that could not be precluded without also precluding
all forms of digital-signature or "signed-MAC" codes used for data
authentication/tamper-proofing. With CPU and bandwidth rising still,
it may even become practical.

In "Winnowing and Chaffing", the sender takes each individual "bit" of
a message, and sends is (in clear-text) in its own data-packet, which
also contains a packet sequence number and a MAC digest taken over both
the "bit" and the sequence number together. The sender (or anyone else
downstream) can copy the packets, use the same sequence numbers, alter
the "bit" value to the opposite value, put garbage in the MAC digest,
and add these packets to the stream along with the originals.

The result is similar to one-time-pad (modulo signature strength).
Without foreknowledge of the signature/MAC verification key, there is no
way to discover whether n-th bit 0, or n-th bit 1, is the right value.
