Hackers crack government site
Official information was replaced with
pornographic pictures after computer hackers
broke into an official government website
late Tuesday night. The hackers also left
behind a message expressing their political
views over Prime Minister Goran Persson's
Social Democratic government. The message
said: "The government comprises a bunch of
incompetent ministers who are good at
taking care of everything except the best
interests of the country."

Indian reporters prayed before arms sting Operation
The undercover Internet journalists whose
videotapes threaten to blow the lid off
India's military and political establishment
prayed each time they went to meetings at
which they secretly filmed government
officials. The bribery scandal they sparked
immediately claimed the chief of Prime
Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's Bharatiya
Janata Party, which leads the ruling federal
coalition, and four defense officials have
been suspended pending a probe. One of
Vajpayee's coalition allies is clamoring for
the resignation of Defense Minister George
Fernandes. The two reporters from an upstart
New Delhi-based Web Site who posed as arms
dealers dreaded that their hidden cameras
would be spotted or that officials would spot
their ignorance of weapons.

The truth about Internet fraud
Online credit card scams cost Visa USA at
least US$48 million last year. Read on to
discover the real story behind the biggest
threat to e-commerce and how you can protect
your business and yourself. When Western
Union Holdings' Web site was hacked last
September, the result was any company's
worst nightmare: The intruders stole close
to 16,000 credit card numbers belonging to
customers who had used WesternUnion.com to
make online money transfers. The company
had to contact every one of those people
to let them know about the breach. "No
fraudulent transactions were consummated,
which was our No. 1 priority," says Western
Union spokesman Pete Ziverts. Luckily,
customers' Social Security numbers were
not kept on the server with the credit
card data.

Funding held up over security
Under a new policy that forces agencies
to incorporate information security into
their plans, the Office of Management and
Budget has held up funding for several new
and existing systems requested in the fiscal
2002 budget. Although the White House and
OMB will not release the final fiscal 2002
budget until April, agencies have been
negotiating for funding since last September.
During that time, OMB has suspended system
requests at several agencies pending proof
that appropriate levels of security will be
put in place, said Glenn Schlarman, a security
policy analyst at OMB=92s Office of Information
and Regulatory Affairs.

When Your Mole Betrays You
Computers weren't readily available in 1949 when
George Orwell wrote his futuristic satire 1984,
but the word "computer" could easily substitute
for "television" in the following passage:
"With the development of television, and the
technical advance which made it possible to
receive and transmit simultaneously on the same
instrument, private life came to an end. Every
citizen, or at least every citizen important
enough to be worth watching, could be kept for
twenty four hours a day under the eyes of the
police...." One of the technologies that has
raised fears of Orwellian surveillance is face
scanning, which can be used to identify people
without their knowledge or permission. Yes, Big
Brother is watching your face.
