Chinese hackers attack Japanese websites over shrine visit
Agence France-Presse, 8/14/2001
http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?threadid=88483

BEIJING, Aug 14 (AFP) - A group of ultra-nationalist Chinese hackers
said Tuesday they had attacked a series of Japanese websites in
retaliation for a visit by Japan's prime minister to a controversial war
memorial.

The announcement by the Red Hacker's Alliance came one day after Premier
Junichiro Koizumi Monday visited the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors
nearly 2.5 million war dead, including 14 class-A war criminals. "When
news of this issue broke, some members of the Red Hacker's Alliance were
summoned to discuss a reaction," the group said in an e-mail posted on
the Sina.com website. "Eventually we decided to do what we are good at
to express the online youth's extreme dissatisfaction with the new
Japanese government," the group said.

The list of hacked Japanese targets included company sites and sites of
research institutes, the alliance said in its statement. Visitors to
one of the affected Japanese sites late Tuesday were met by a white
screen and the triumphant words "hacked by sharpwinner." The Chinese
government has been striking an uneasy balance over Koizumi's visit,
seeking to contain fall-out with a major trade partner while allowing
Chinese to vent strong nationalist feelings. A lone protester was
detained when he tried to stage a demonstration in front of the Japanese
embassy in Beijing earlier Tuesday.

Serbia's Hackers Blackmail Internet Providers
BBC Monitoring/Radio B92, Belgrade, 8/14/2001
http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?threadid=88484

Text of report by Belgrade-based Radio B92 on 14 August Unhappy about
the increase in the price of the phone impulse, domestic hackers have
threatened the PTT [post and telecommunications] that they will crash
its communications system unless their demands are met. Their demands
are, among other things, the annulment of the decision on the increase
in price of the phone impulse and return to the old night phone traffic
regime. The deadline set by the hackers expires on Friday [17 August].
In the meantime, the Belgrade state prosecutor's office has launched
preliminary criminal proceedings against unknown persons on the founded
suspicion of blocking Serbia's main Internet link with the world,
incurring losses to Telekom Serbia and PTT Serbia Net, as well as to
other companies providing Internet services in Serbia.
