It looks like, dispite early reports that the RFLP claimed to be
responsible for today's attacks, group after group has disclaimed
responsibility.

In the meanwhile...

Bin Laden warned US 3 weeks ago
by Sam Kiley in Tel Aviv

The world's most wanted terrorist leader Osama bin Laden is the chief
suspect in the attack on the World Trade Center today.

Bin Laden is the multi-billionaire head of an international terror
network dedicated to the destruction of the "twin evils" of American
influence and capitalism worldwide.

An Arab journalist with access to Bin Laden said today that the
terrorist leader warned three weeks ago that he and his followers would
carry out an unprecedented attack on US interests for its support of
Israel.

Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the Londonbased al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper,
said Islamic extremists led by Bin Laden were "almost certainly" behind
the attack on the World Trade Center.

He said: "Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he would attack
American interests in an unprecedented attack, a very big one.

"Personally we received information that he planned very, very big
attacks against American interests. We received several warnings like
this.

He added: "We did not take it so seriously, preferring to see what would
happen before reporting it."

Doctor Magnus Ranstorp, deputy director of the Centre for the Study of
Terrorism and Political violence at St Andrews University in Scotland,
also believes that Bin Laden followers are behind the attack.

He said: "Only his people, the Al Qaeda, could carry out such a
sophisticated, military operation in terms of timing and targeting.
Only they have the manpower and mental strength to go through with this,
and at least three teams were involved.

"This attack bears the hallmark of the group. They would have planned
it for at least six months, masterminding a detailed plan to overcome
security.

"Only they would have the logistical requirements to gain access to
aircraft and the capability."

Chris Yates, an aviation expert at Jane's Transport in London, said:
"This is perhaps the most audacious terrorist attack that's ever taken
place in the world.

"It takes a logistics operation from the terror group involved that is
second to none. Only a very small handful of terror groups is on that
list . . . I would name at the top of the list Osama bin Laden."

Bin Laden's group Al Qaeda is also affiliated with Islamic Jihad groups.
Its stated aim is to be "dedicated to opposing non-Islamic governments
with force and violence".

It had been reported earlier in the day that the Palestinian group the
Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) claimed
responsibility for the attack. But the DFLP, led by Nayes Hawatwe, has
been the least effective of Palestinian militant groups in organising
attacks, either on Israeli military personnel or in organising the
bombing of civilian targets.

Bin Laden, a Saudi Arabian dissident believed by western intelligence
agencies to be based in Afghanistan under the protection of the Taliban,
has by far the greatest reach in world terrorism. In the past year
several of his followers have been arrested inside America and crossing
from Canada with bomb-making equipment.

In Jordan, Israel's eastern neighbour, two Bin Laden cells were broken
up by intelligence agents, and several militants were arrested who
allegedly confessed to planning major attacks on Israeli and Palestinian
targets at the millennium.

But today the Afghan Taliban said that Bin Laden could not have been
responsible for the attack. Spokesman Abdul Hai Mutmaen said: "What
happened in the United States was not a job of ordinary people. It
could have been the work of governments. Osama bin Laden cannot do this
work, neither us . . . we are not supporting terrorism. We condemn
this.n

Since the eruption of the intifada and the collapse of the Middle East
peace process Islamic groups have boasted that their numbers have been
rapidly swollen by volunteers from all over the world.

The next most effective anti-Israeli guerrilla force to Bin Laden must
be Hezbollah (the Party of God), based in south Lebanon. While

Bin Laden buys his equipment and trains his terrorists all over the
world, the Hezbollah gets direct support from Syria and Iran.

Both of these countries have tried to give the impression that they are
reforming and doing away with violent anti-American rhetoric. But both
remain committed to the destruction of the state of Israel and what they
call Islamic and Arab solidarity against "the Zionist entity".

Hezbollah guerrillas forced Israel to withdraw from a "security zone" in
south Lebanon 14 months ago and have threatened northern Israel with
rocket attacks in support of the Palestinians.

The intelligence source said that Hamas (the Islamic resistance),
Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
General Command have all been working "in co-ordination in their attacks
on Israeli targets" in Israel and Palestinian areas.

Israeli politicians and intelligence chiefs also say that Yasser Arafat
lurks in the background to attacks on Israel. However, none have
suggested that he would support an act of terror on American soil.
