The Jerusalem Media and Communication Centre (JMCC) survey found that 85.3 per cent of the Palestinians polled supported continuing the uprising, or Intifada – up from 80.2 per cent five months ago. Fifty-three per cent of the 1,198 people polled said they were optimistic that the uprising would achieve its goal of ending Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Arab East Jerusalem. The United Nations does not recognise Israel’s right to these territories, which were captured in the 1967 Middle East War and which Palestinians want for an independent state. The survey showed that 84.6 per cent of Palestinians support using armed operations to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, a 14 per cent increase from June. Ghassan Khatib, director of the East Jerusalem-based JMCC, said Palestinian attitudes had become more radical because of the “fierce pressure inflicted on them by Israel”. “We see a general radicalisation of Palestinian society because the peace option is not working anymore,” Khatib said. “As prospects towards solving the conflict become bleaker, it is natural that the Palestinians will become more violent,” he told Reuters. The poll’s margin of error was three per cent. – Reuters ------------------------ Yahoo!
