Blast derails crowded train in India's northeast, casualties feared

GUWAHATI, India, Sept 25 (AFP) - A crowded passenger train was derailed
Tuesday when a powerful bomb allegedly planted by tribal separatists
exploded on the tracks in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, police
said.

The bomb attack occurred at around 7:00 pm (1330 GMT) in the remote
Bongain district, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of Guwahati, the
state capital of this oil-rich Indian province bordering Bhutan and
Bangladesh, they said.

Police sources said at least 1,200 people were on the North-East Express
which was travelling from New Delhi to Guwahati when the blast occurred
at the tiny township of Baghmara.

Six of the train's 13 carriages derailed after the blast ripped apart
the tracks, an official from the state-run rail company said.

"The train was travelling fast, it was crowded and we fear there are
casualties," he said, adding that a train recovery vehicle was on its
way to the site.

The police blamed the attack on outlawed tribal separatists belonging to
the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) but said details of the
attack or casualties were not yet available.

The explosives were hidden under a rail bridge and set off with a
radio-controlled device, they added.

The NDFB was blamed for a similar bombing in 1998 in Assam that killed
33 passengers on board the prestigious inter-state Brahmaputra Express.
Many more were maimed in the attack.

More than 20,000 people have died in separatist campaigns in Assam in
the past 20 years. The ethnic Bodo tribespeople have been spearheading
a two-decade-old campaign for a homeland carved out of the northeastern
Indian state.

The Assam authorities say the Bodo guerrillas operate from clandestine
bases in Bhutan.
