Granted, a misguided teenage hacker could download or modify a virus or worm, unleash it to impress a friend, and cause significant damage to systems. But this "remedy" is akin to making life in prison the penalty for tossing a lit match on the sidewalk, in complete ignorance (or worse, deference) to those market forces responsible for having soaked the country coast-to-coast in gasoline. Why not "life in prison" for selling and distributing software systems, known to contain serious security vulnerabilities, profiting with full knowledge that those systems will be used in critical applications despite seller's warnings and attempted disclaimers. We could prosecute such vendors under "sabotage of critical infrastructure" laws. Thoughts?
