Six injured as barge explodes- sinks at Suez Canal

    CAIRO, Sept 26, (Reuters) *****

 - Six Sri Lankan crewmembers were critically injured on Wednesday after
a barge preparing to sail through Egypt's Suez Canal caught fire,
exploded and sank while refuelling outside Port Suez, Suez Canal sources
said.

Canal traffic was unaffected, they said.

The sources said the barge, an empty Ukrainian-registered vessel that
normally transports vehicles, had dropped off its cargo and was due to
travel north through the canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean
with 83 Sri Lankan crew.

The barge's point of departure and final destination were not
immediately clear.

The sources said the fire started while the barge was refuelling from a
supply boat in the waiting area outside the harbour at Port Suez, at the
southern end of the canal.

After the fire broke out, there was an explosion and the boat sank, they
said.

The boat supplying fuel to the barge was not affected by the explosion,
and there was no change in traffic through the canal, a major source of
hard currency to Egypt, after the accident, the sources said.
