LA Clears Subway as Passengers Report Dizziness

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Authorities evacuated a major subway line in Los
Angeles and closed a main city street during the evening rush hour on
Wednesday after passengers on a train car complained of dizziness and
itching eyes and throats, police said.

A Los Angeles police spokesman confirmed that all 16 Metro Red Line
subway stations and trains were evacuated and that fire crews had
cordoned off a nearly four-block area around the intersection of
Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue, near the Koreatown neighborhood.

There were no reports of serious injuries but several people were taken
to local hospitals for treatment. The spokesman said officials had not
determined the cause of the complaints.

The 16 subway stations were shut down after some two dozen passengers
and two police officers complained of burning eyes and itching throats,
possibly as a reaction to a gas or chemical leak.

One passenger told KABC-TV that his train was evacuated by officials who
explained to passengers that a gas leak had been reported at the
Wilshire and Western subway station.

Hazardous materials crews were investigating and ambulances were called
to the scene.

The Wilshire/Western station is the midpoint of a 17-mile subway line
that runs from Union Station downtown to North Hollywood and carries
about 121,000 passengers a day.

The line, which was completed in 2000 at a cost of $6.6 billion, has
been featured several Hollywood films including ''Lethal Weapon 3'' and
``Speed.''
