  For Imams of Mosques on the first anniversary of the Aqsa intifada
      In the name of Allah the most Gracious the most Merciful

                   Sheikhs and Ulama of the Ummah

             Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

  We are well aware that those who ascend the pulpits each Friday to
remind people of their religion, Ummah s concerns and enemies schemes
are the ones who more than others should be interested with the burnt
Aqsa pulpit.  They are the first people that should act to rescue the
Aqsa walls from collapse.  Those Khatibs (preachers) build the solid
walls of creed that shields the Ummah from constant attacks by the
enemies.  Thus we had to address you Khatibs in each and every corner of
the earth to remind you of your noble duty towards your beloved Mosque,
the first Muslims Qibla and the site of your prophet s Isra .  We seize
the opportunity of the first anniversary of the Aqsa intifada to suggest
to you some elements of a Juma Khutba (Friday sermon) on that important
event in history of our Ummah to benefit from and invest it along the
road towards liberating our holy places and our cherished usurped land
of Palestine.  We are all hopes that you would interact with the event
and activate those around you through arranging fund-raising campaigns
to back the struggle and steadfastness of the Palestinian people so that
our enemies would know that we are really united in support of Beitul
Makdes and the Aqsa. 

Reasons and motives of the intifada

Knowing reasons for outbreak of the Aqsa intifada would facilitate for
us knowing reasons for its continuation for one whole year so far.  The
intifada has been closely linked to the Aqsa Mosque and it carried the
Mosque s name.  It is an intifada for the sake of the Aqsa, its purity
and honor.  As long as the Aqsa is threatened the intifada will remain
ignited.  As long as the Zionists continue their criminal bloody
policies our people will be only more insistent on confronting force
with force, for rights are not begged but are grabbed. 

The intifada started after terrorist Ariel Sharon desecrated the Aqsa
Mosque s yards along with three thousand Zionist occupiers who escorted
him on Thursday 28 September 2000.  The result was the outbreak of
violent confrontations between our Palestinian people and the occupation
forces that increased in the following day leading to the fall of seven
martyrs in the Aqsa plaza after the Friday congregation.  Others fell in
several Palestinian cities when the Palestinian people took to the
streets in an angry uprising, even in the areas occupied in 1948,
challenging the Jewish repression.  Martyrs continued to fall over one
whole year in which the real image of Zionism was exposed through their
criminal practices, which they pursued in a futile bid to halt the
intifada. 

The intifada broke out to reflect a rejection of occupation and the
Zionist project on our holy land.  It also declared our people s
rejection of all attempts to surrender our historic and legitimate right
in Palestine from the Sea to the River.  Our people have suffered from
oppressive and humiliating agreements and reached the conviction that
there was no other way to liberation and dignity except resistance and
Jihad. 

Characteristics and fruits of the intifada:

1- The most prominent intifada outcome was a clear warning to Zionists
that fearless men were protecting the Aqsa.  They do not fear death for
the sake of defending it as described by their prophet, peace be upon
him, There will remain a group of my Ummah holding to their faith and
vanquishing to their enemy, not harmed by those at odds with them with
the exception of occasional fatigue until they meet their fate.  They
asked where are they? He said in Beitul Makdes and surroundings of
Beitul Makdes .  The years of Oslo and the repressive agreements did not
change the fact that the Palestinian people were not tamed into
relinquishing their rights to their lands and holy places and that the
Zionists must beware of any encroachment on the Aqsa Mosque as such
encroachment would result in bloodshed. 

2- The intifada proved that the Islamic Nation is strongly united over
protection of the Aqsa.  Marches and rallies were organized in various
Arab and Islamic countries and Khutbas (sermons) were united in mosques
of all Islamic countries from Tangiers to Jakarta.  They denounced
Zionist desecration of the Ummah s holy places and atrocities against
the Palestinian people.  The Aqsa came to the forefront anew as a Qibla
for Jihad that unites Muslims against enemies attacks bringing back to
mind what happened in the era of Salahuddin who united the Ummah at his
time to liberate Beitul Makdes and its surroundings from the invading
crusaders.  This issue made the Islamic groups and movements reconsider
their priorities, allocating a sizeable portion for the Aqsa issue and
sidestepping marginal conflicts, as a nucleus towards real unity for the
sake of Al-Quds and the Aqsa. 

3- The intifada contributed in boosting Arab and Islamic awareness with
regard to the Palestinian cause, which was obvious in the increasing
number of seminars and rallies organized by student blocs, vocational
unions and other popular committees and even government circles in
certain countries with the aim of supporting the intifada and denouncing
those who want to abort it.  The intifada won growing importance on the
part of Khatibs in many mosques including the Grand Mosque in holy
Makkah.  Worshippers prayed for the well being and preservation of the
Aqsa Mosque in face of Zionist schemes.  They also prayed for victory of
the Mujahideen who defend the Mosque s sanctity and for Allah s mercy on
the persevering and steadfast people in Palestine.  Concern over that
question witnessed a further boost through the increasing number of
sites on the internet that cover details of the question and latest
developments in Palestine other than the increasing number of messages
exchanged on the internet over the Palestine cause.  Muslims have even
scored a symbolic and material victory as a result of penetrating and
paralyzing a big number of enemy sites on the internet including the
Knesset site with the losses estimated at more than a million dollars. 
Meanwhile, the role of Arab and Islamic television channels helped in
spreading awareness about what was going on in the land of Palestine. 
Zionist expert in Palestinian affairs Danny Rubenstein considered this
role as one of the important differences between the past and present
intifada.  He said, There are 22 Arab satellite stations that tackle in
detail events of the Aqsa intifada.  Youths who never heard about
Palestine are now being acquainted with the Palestinian problem.  The
young generations from the Ocean to the Gulf are witnessing programs on
Palestinian sufferings and Israeli massacres such as Deir Yassin, Kufr
Qassem, Sabra and Chatilla in addition to witnessing the tragic
situation of refugees in Lebanon and others. 

4- The intifada gave prominence to unique Jihad models that raised high
the Fard of Jihad for the cause of Allah and evoked the spirit of
martyrdom through the convoy of commandos who were cherished by the
Ummah for their brave sacrifices that astonished the whole world and
shook the Zionist entity.  Those martyrs retaliated to Jewish savage
crimes such as the assassination of the Hamas political leaders in
Nablus Jamal Mansour and Jamal Salim.  Scores of commandos launched
those martyrdom operations inflicting huge casualties in lines of the
Zionist occupiers. 

5- The Palestinian people, in addition to the abovementioned Jihad
models, invented new Jihad methods to resist occupiers.  Mujahid Alaa
Abu Olba used a bus he was driving to run over a group of Zionist
occupation soldiers killing and wounding scores of them. 
Remote-controlled explosive devices were also used in this intifada that
destroyed numerous tanks.  The Mujahideen also used mortar shells and
videotaped their armed operations.  Mujahid Hamdy Ensio launched the
first martyrdom operation at sea in which he destroyed an enemy navy
patrol boat off the Gaza coast. 

6- The intifada served the entire Ummah through its effective
contribution in halting the normalization drive that became endemic in
all Arab and Islamic capitals under American pressure.  The intifada
also silenced the normalization mongers and doubled the popular
rejection of the Zionist entity.  It further gave a big boost to popular
parties that formed committees to fight normalization with the Zionist
enemy.  The Arab and Islamic peoples went further by calling for a
boycott of American products. 

7- The intifada inflicted severe losses in the Zionist enemy lines on
all human, political, economic, morale and demographic levels.  The
enemy sustained human casualties that surpassed past periods.  The enemy
leaders expressed shock on several occasions at the extent of Zionist
human losses and said that they were engaged in real war draining their
potentials and dwindling confidence in those leaders.  On the political
level, the Zionist entity lost many gains achieved in past years when
many Arab and Islamic countries severed relations with it.  Calls for
reviving economic boycott of the Zionist entity surfaced anew as that
entity s world reputation plummeted due to scenes of the murder of
Palestinian children especially the child Mohammed Al-Dorra.  As for the
economic sector, the Zionist entity s losses in the tourism sector only
reached 80% and the entire tourism industry was on the verge of total
collapse because of the Aqsa intifada.  The agricultural and industrial
sectors were also damaged while unemployment rates soared.  The Zionist
army suffered extensively as a result of increasing reservist days of
service and continued summoning of reservists.  On the morale level, the
martyrdom operations spread unprecedented panic in lines of the Zionists
to the extent that big cities turned into ghost cities after each
martyrdom operation.  This led to counter-immigration outside the
Zionist entity while Jews refrained from immigrating to that entity. 

8- The intifada contributed in uncovering generosity in the Ummah as
evident in the financial donations to the intifada through the
fund-raising campaigns in various Arab and Islamic countries.  Many
distinctive models were witnessed revealing that the Ummah still owns a
huge store of benevolence that our enemies could never wipe out. 

9- The Aqsa intifada put an end to the so-called peace process as
participants in it admitted that it was past history.  The return to
negotiations or peace with the murderers of children was no longer
acceptable after the Aqsa intifada stripped the peace mongers and
ideologists of their last argument card.  Massacres, murders,
destruction and desecration of holy shrines were all perpetrated under
the false calls for peace by Zionists.  The result was a Palestinian
popular unanimity on the option of Jihad and resistance.  Various
Palestinian factions got closer over the goal of maintaining the
intifada until ejection of the usurping occupiers.  The Palestinian
self-rule authority was also compelled to release detained Mujahideen in
its jails, end their persecution and close the political detention file,
which our people suffered from during the Oslo years. 

10- The intifada revealed the American administration s ugly face with
its absolute bias in favor of the Zionist entity.  It was obvious that
blood of the victims of Zionist savagery did not mean a thing to
American politicians.  They even found excuses and justifications for
Zionist crimes and did not apologize for the Zionists use of American
weapons in their mass murder campaigns of Palestinians. 

11- The most important accomplishment of the intifada was turning the
Zionist entity from a state seeking to expand into neighboring countries
through normalization into an entity that was fearing for its very
existence.  The Zionists also started discussing the basis on which
Zionism was established, for no longer can they tell the world that
Palestine was a land without people for a people without land and the
illusion that the Palestinians could surrender their soil was over.  The
Zionists started to admit that they were facing a people with deeply
rooted civilization that extended far back in history and that no one
could ever expel them from their lands or make them forget the duty of
liberating national soil and ending the Zionist project in the region. 

12- The intifada restored the awareness to the Arab and Islamic Ummah on
true characteristics of the Zionist project and the colonialist nature
of the Zionist entity and their danger on the entire Ummah.  The West
planted the Zionist colonialist project in the heart of the Ummah to
disintegrate its unity and prevent any Arab or Islamic renaissance.  The
Ummah s backing to the Palestinian people is an Arab and Islamic
interest since that people serve as the spearhead and first defense line
of the Ummah, which should thus shoulder its responsibility as dictated
by its interests and religious duty. 

Our duty towards the Aqsa intifada

The Palestinian people offered more than 700 martyrs, 30,000 wounded and
about 6,000 detainees with the approach of the second year of the
intifada.  The Palestinians also suffered more than three billion
dollars in losses as a result of destroying factories, damaging
farmland, demolishing houses and halting developmental projects at the
hands of Zionist occupation forces.  The unemployment figure reached
around one million workers.  Those losses reveal the magnitude of the
Palestinian people s sacrifices for the sake of retaining the Jihad
torch.  The Palestinian people are leading the way for the Ummah towards
liberating the Aqsa Mosque and are insisting on the march of sacrifice
for the sake of Allah while bearing in mind the holy Quranic verses,
&amp; if ye are suffering hardships, they are suffering similar
hardships; but ye have hope from Allah, while they have none.  But in
their Jihad they look forward for their Ummah s support in
implementation of the prophet s Hadith that the believers were like one
body that caters for each other.  Hence, we appeal to all to interact
with this anniversary and invest it in spreading awareness among Muslims
of their central cause and encouraging them to shoulder their duty. 

We propose a number of programs and activities on that occasion:

-Organizing fund-raising campaigns to support the Aqsa and its guardians
the Mujahideen.  You should call the attention to the fact that what was
spent in this sphere was not Sadaka but rather Jihad for the cause of
Allah, which could double the Hasanat 700 folds as in the Hadith
carrying that meaning.  You should also advocate sponsoring families of
martyrs and detainees in response to the Hadith that those who equip a
Mujahid or sponsor his family are considered as equal to the Mujahideen
who go for a battle for the sake of Allah and to defend the weak. 

-Endorsing the noble status of the holy Aqsa Mosque and its surroundings
through citing verses of the holy Quran and Hadith of prophet Mohammed,
peace be upon him, to link Muslims to that Mosque and to urge them to
allocate certain Wakf, yields of which would be spent on maintaining the
Aqsa and supporting those steadfast in its surroundings. 

-Holding rallies, sit-ins, seminars and lectures on this occasion. 

-Asking the media to cover this anniversary in a way activating the
Ummah and exposing the real image of the Zionist oppressors and
murderers. 

-Urging the Islamic countries to sever all forms of relations with the
Zionist entity and warning the Americans that the Ummah would go ahead
in its gradual boycott of American products considering Washington a
partner in the crimes committed against our people in Palestine, which
would inflict great harm to their interests in the region and would
eventually lead them to reconsider their biased policy in favor of the
Zionist entity. 

-Passing Fatwa (edict) supporting Jihad of our people in Palestine and
legitimizing operations against the Zionist occupation. 

-Asking Almighty Allah for victory and for assisting the Mujahideen and
the Palestinian people who are patient and stationed on their lands. 

We hope that Allah would accept and bless your endeavor.  We also pray
that you would remain an asset to Islam and Muslims and that Allah would
guide you into supporting His religion and the Aqsa.
