                  Sharon brands Arafat a 'terrorist'

Israel says the vessel was carrying 50 tons of munitions
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has accused the Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat of being a key figure in international terrorism,
brushing aside a fresh Palestinian crackdown on militants who feature
on a list of suspects drawn up by Israel.

He spoke as the US peace envoy to the Middle East, Anthony Zinni,
opened talks with senior Palestinian and Israeli officials over
security issues - the first such meeting for a month.

But the gathering took place in an atmosphere of deepening distrust
between Israel and the Palestinians, stirred up by the seizure of what
Israel says was a ship full of weapons from Iran destined for the
Palestinian Authority.

Israeli officials say the boat was captained by a colonel in the
Palestinian naval police.

At a news conference on board the ship, which has been impounded in
the southern Israeli port of Eilat, Mr Sharon accused Mr Arafat of
personally ordering the delivery.

Calling the vessel a "ship of terror" and Mr Arafat "a liar", he said
the Palestinian leader and his Palestinian Authority were "a major
player in the networks of world terrorism" - led by Iran.

"The type and character of the weapons prove once again that the
Palestinian Authority has been focusing its efforts on terrorism, in
preparing the operational infrastructure for the next waves of
terrorism."

Detained

Mr Sharon's launched his attack despite fresh moves by the Palestinian
Authority to crack down on the militant Islamic Jihad group.

Six members of the organisation were arrested after a raid by 200
policemen on the Jenin refugee camp early on Sunday.

One of Israel's most-wanted suspects was reportedly arrested
Those detained are reported to include Ali Saffouri, who is high on
the list of suspects Israel has demanded be arrested.

The Palestinian Authority has continued to deny any connection with
the ship, calling it "Israeli propaganda intended to sabotage Mr
Zinni's mission".

Mr Zinni is on his second visit to the region after an initial trip
was cut short last month due to a surge in violence. He is due to
return to the US on Monday.

"The focus is on security and building confidence, ensuring that we
create a situation and an environment that eliminate terror, that we
begin a process that will lead us beyond a ceasefire," he said after a
meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.

"It is a long road," said the envoy, who is planning a follow-up visit
to the region in two weeks time to develop further his truce-to-talks
plan.
