Marines' Digital Camouflage Uniforms To Make Fall Debut In Europe
By Scott Schonauer, Rota bureau
NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain - The Marine Corps' new uniforms are out, but
personnel in Europe must wait until fall to get their wash-and-wear
"cammies."
The improved combat-utility uniform - which features a computerized pixel
camouflage pattern - should reach most overseas sites around October,
according to Capt. Burrell Parmer, spokesman for the Marine Corps Systems
Command in Quantico, Va.
The much-anticipated uniform is currently available only where Marine
expeditionary forces are based, at Officer Candidates School and at Marine
Corps Recruit Depots at Parris Island, S.C., and San Diego.
But some Marines in Europe would like to get into the new uniforms sooner.
"I'd like them now," said Cpl. Michael Miller, a member of the Rota-based
Marine Corps Security Force Company Europe. "You hear all the talk about
them, but then you're not getting them."
Not yet, at least.
Since the fatigues made their debut in January, officer candidates and
recruits have been first priority. As soon as the demand goes down at the
training bases, the uniforms will be made available online through the Navy
Exchange service and at military clothing stores worldwide, Burrell wrote in
an e-mail.
The new cammies are considered to be a huge change from the current uniform,
which the Corps has used for more than 20 years.
The most noticeable feature is the camouflage design, from the tiger-stripe
pattern to the digital look. Other changes include: Velcro-fastened, angled
pockets; buttons that hold up sleeve cuffs from the inside to prevent
snagging; and spaces in the pants and top to insert knee and elbow pads.
Ironing is not required. The new uniforms are made with a blend of nylon and
cotton. The wash-and-wear material means Marines will not have to worry
about ironing their uniforms each morning.
"It saves money, saves time," said Lance Cpl. Matthew Merta, a Marine
stationed in Rota. "Marines here, especially, will not have to worry as much
about cammies. They can worry about the job."
The Corps plans to gradually transition from the old uniforms to the new
over the next four years. The uniforms will cost about $60 for a set of
pants and top.
