Thousands of phones in Spain cut off after sabotage attempt

Agence France Presse, 6/15/02 http://www.itmatters.com.ph/news/news_06172002g.html

Thousands of phones and Internet connections were severed in 15 Spanish
provinces after saboteurs used chainsaws to cut through fibre optic
cables belonging to Spanish telecoms operator Telefonica, the Spanish
press reported Saturday.

The sabotage happened on Friday and affected 20 fibre optic data
transmission lines, creating disruption to local and international calls
and cutting off Internet access to thousands of businesses and
individuals.

Communications between airports were particularly affected, causing
delays of three hours in the Galicia region, northwestern Spain, while
numerous automatic cash distributors shut down across Spain.

Telefonica announced that service had been restored late Friday.

The Spanish ministry of science and technology has asked
telecommunications companies to activate a backup plan in the case of
such emergencies in future.
