Study: Security Worries Holding Back Web Services

<a href="http://www.internetwk.com/webDev/INW20020620S0007">http://www.internetwk.com/webDev/INW20020620S0007>

Immature and at-times overlapping security standards and technologies
have left enterprises confused about how to secure emerging Web services
architectures, according to a study released Thursday from ZapThink LLC.

The analyst group, which focuses on XML issues, cited concerns about
security as the major roadblock on the path to Web services adoption.
ZapThink outlined a growing Web services security industry —which it
said would grow from $40 million in 2001 to more than $4.4 billion in
2006—designed to address such concerns.

Web services security is perhaps most challenging because it touches so
many disciplines, from encryption to access management and beyond, said
Jason Bloomberg, ZapThink senior analyst. "You can't just buy a little
security" when it comes to Web services, he said.

ZapThink predicted interest in this area would spike in the next 12
months and identified 12 separate industry segments contributing to Web
services security.
