More Videotron cable lines cut
- 100,000 still without cable or Internet
Monday, August 12, 2002

MONTREAL (Canadian Press) - Videotron work crews discovered a new
batch of severed cable lines as a three-month strike-lockout by 2,200
Videotron employees entered its third month.

The fibreoptic cable-TV and high-speed Internet lines were cut in ten
locations across Quebec late Sunday and early Monday as Videotron
completed repairs on lines that were severed last week. Some 100,000
subscribers were still without cable or Internet service Monday,
including 50,000 people in the Montreal region.

Last week, about half of Videotron's 1.5 million customers lost cable
and Internet signals after lines were cut across the province in what
the company called acts of vandalism.

Also on Monday, police made the first arrest in the bitter labour
dispute, but the unidentified suspect was not charged with cutting
cable lines.

The locked-out Videotron employee, nabbed by Montreal police, was
arrested and charged with mischief after a bus carrying replacement
workers had a window smashed.

Videotron, Quebec's largest cable company, said there have been 246
acts of sabotage against cable lines since workers walked off the job
May 8 and were subsequently locked out by the company.

Videotron says the service disruptions have cost them approximately
$20 million.

A $50,000 reward was posted by the company last week for information
leading to the arrest and conviction of people responsible for
damaging the company's network of 27,000 kilometres of coaxial cable
and 7,000 kilometres of fibreoptic lines.

Police would not say whether a tip from the public led to Monday's arrest.

Videotron technicians, office workers and call-centre employees went
on strike in May when the company transferred 646 installation and
maintenance jobs to Entourage Solutions Inc.
