The Bush administration has approved the inclusion of Oman in the Falcon 2020 program to maintain EW systems for F-16 fighter-jet fleets. Oman has ordered 12 F-16s from Lockheed Martin. The Pentagon awarded ITT Corp. a $51.6 million contract for the supply of the ALQ-211[V]4, Advanced Integrated Defense Electronic Warfare System for Oman and Chile. The electronic warfare system will be used on F-16 Aircraft being procured under separate acquisitions for these countries by the F-16 System Program office. The Falcon 2020 project is meant to sustain the life of F-16 fleets. The program was renewed earlier this year and includes modification kits, engineering services, technical support, repair and return, contractor support, acquisition development and integration, and supplies in support of the F-16 weapon system. The program would also allow for future major capability upgrades. Under the contract, Oman will acquire 12 systems, one for each of the F-16s ordered. A Pentagon announcement said that so far $38.7 million of the funds have already been obligated. The Defense Department has awarded Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, based in Fort Worth, Texas, a $10.8 million contract to provide for incorporation of Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare System for the Oman F-16 aircraft program. Officials said solicitation for the Omani contract began in May and was completed last month. The Block 50 aircraft will be delivered by 2006 and will include the AN/APG-68[V]XM fire-control radar and the Lantirn [Low Altitude Navigation & Targeting Infra-Red for Night] targeting pod. Muscat will also obtain the AIM-120C advanced medium-range air-to-air missile and the AIM-9M-8/9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile. Oman has been constructing an air base for its F-16 fleet which will be available to the United States. Officials said the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command are working with Muscat to ensure that the base is built according to standards that can house and maintain U.S. warplanes. Oman is expected to play a major role in any U.S.-led war against Iraq. One scenario is that Muscat would provide bases for U.S. jets and helicopters as well as facilities for refueling. The United States uses a range of military facilities in Oman in an arrangement that brings in at least $50 million a year to the sultanate. ------------------------ Yahoo!
