The Islamic Movement's Rally Last Friday
"Tens of thousands of people attended the sixth annual rally organized
by the northern branch of the Israeli Islamic Movement in the city's
[Umm-Al Fahm] football stadium on Friday." (Al-Ittihad, September 16).

The rally was again held under the banner "The Al-Aqsa Mosque is in
danger.", but this year the danger is much more apparent in light of
last October's events and the explosion at Nahariya.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islam's third most sacred site and it is located
in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Panorama published a letter from Uri Borovsky, Prime Minister's
councilor for Arab Affairs, which was sent to Mayor of Umm Al-Fahm
before the rally. The letter asked the mayor to cancel the rally or to
change its banner, "because he looked into the issue and found that
Al-Aqsa is not in danger, because Israel maintains the Holy sites of
all religions." (September 14).
Raid Salah, leader of the northern wing and previous mayor of Umm
Al-Fahm, said in an interview in Kull Al-Arab: "The government's
policy is an incitement by itself."
Sheikh Salah also spoke of the continued incitement against the
Islamic movement which occurs every year before the rally; the
explosion in Nahariya, which he condemned totally as the movement's
ethos does not believe or support military solutions; and the
institution of Al-Aqsa and its work. (September 14).
Salah recalled some of the destabilizing efforts employed by the
Israeli government: "Frightening people in order to stop them
attending the rally; representing the Islamic movement as an illegal
movement and collecting irrelevent testimonies for the Or commission
in order to deny police culpability regarding the killing of 13
Palestinian citizens of Israel last October." (Sawt Al-Haqq Wal
Hurriya, September 14).
At the rally Salah also spoke about Islam and violence: "Islam rejects
all acts of violence and terror anywhere and in any form, and the
murder of innocent civilians, be they in Palestine, Iraq or America."
In particular he referred to the attacks in America saying "our
organization feels the great pain of the families of those killed and
injured in the attacks on the United States." (Al-Ittihad, September
16).
Archimandrite Dr. Attallah Hana, spokesman of the Orthodox Church in
Jerusalem and the Occupied Territories, spoke at the rally about the
importance of Jerusalem and its Holy sites: "We want to stress the
fact that Jerusalem is one city and it can't be divided; attacking the
Al-Aqsa Mosque means attacking the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. We as
Arab Palestinian Christians support our Muslim brother wherever they
are, and we support their struggle to protect their Holy Sites."
(Al-Ittihad, September 16).
