In a June 4 meeting with Aldridge, senior Navy and Air Force officials presented their options for replacing the military's aging fleet of EA-6B Prowler aircraft (DAILY, June 7). "I wouldn't say I was unhappy. I would say it was not convincing," Aldridge told reporters at an Aug. 8 breakfast in Washington. The Navy is advocating the Prowler be replaced with the EA-18, an electronic attack version of Boeing's F/A-18F Super Hornet, while the Air Force wants to put jamming equipment on some of its B-52 bombers. "It seemed to me that the plan put forth by this work was, 'here is an Air Force solution and here is a Navy solution,' rather than 'here is a Department of Defense solution,'" Aldridge said. It would be preferable if the services focused on electronic attack capabilities, rather than a specific platform, he said. One idea, he suggested, would be a jamming pod that could fly on multiple platforms. A separate study on electronic warfare now is being conducted as part of the DOD's Defense Planning Guidance, Aldridge said. The results of that study, when completed, may influence the military's final plans for future electronic attack capabilities. "It may be that they [the Navy and Air Force] have the right solution. It was just unconvincing at the time that I heard it," Aldridge said. - Sharon Weinberger ------------------------ Yahoo!
