Russian device detects, jams recording devices

Russian scientists have developed special radio-electronic equipment
that is capable of jamming secret data recording devices. The device is
known as Durman, which in Russian translates as "narcotic."

The item fits inside a briefcase or furniture and inhibits the
recording of data. The system also can provide warnings if nearby
recording equipment is operating.

The equipment was developed for Russian intelligence and security
operations.

Oleg Melnichuk, marketing director for the Pleshakov scientific
research and production center told the Itar-Tass news agency last week
that the system was developed to secure diplomatic missions, government
and banking institutions.

"It will be useful in large and medium businesses in which the
secrecy of deals is considered a priority. The key feature of the
device is its radiating aerial. Unlike in traditional devices, it
cannot be detected," Melnichuk said, noting that several European
countries and India are interested in purchasing the equipment.
